    @xianhua-zhao said in Question about starting behaviour of NotePad++:

    But there is a noticeable and annoying delay (about 5 to 10 seconds) after I start NotePad++, before it shows its main edit screen.

    Notepad++ v7.8.4 (32-bit)

    Notepad++ v8.2.1 (64-bit) Build time : Jan 19 2022 - 18:43:05 Path : C:\Programs\Notepad++\notepad++.exe Command Line : Admin mode : OFF Local Conf mode : ON Cloud Config : OFF OS Name : Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) OS Build : 7601.0 Current ANSI codepage : 1252 Plugins : AnalysePlugin.dll LuaScript.dll mimeTools.dll NppConverter.dll NppExport.dll PythonScript.dll

    Starts up in ~200ms on a 6 core cpu desktop system. The system used can have a large impact on startup time. Some systems are slow at everything.

    Update check turned off, though enabling was also similar startup time.

    Contains 1 empty document. Numbers and sizes could impact startup. Loaded all autocomplete xml files which are not huge in size, added maybe an extra 100ms on startup. I also dropped the notepad++.exe binary on a tab to open, and took about 300ms to open. Huge documents could takes seconds, even minutes if massive as even notepad.exe can do the same long startup on huge files.

    If slow startup, then some investigation might be needed. Guessing in this topic of the cause might not achieve much, as many factors are involved. If discover a bug that is causing it, then let us know.

    I’ve been with similar problem and I’ve solved it downloading exactly the DLL plugin version asked by the Notepad++ version you have on your computer.

    You can see this version on menu “Plugins\Manage Plugins”, searching for “Compare” plugin and taking the number on its right side:2022-03-25 10_34_36-Window.png image url)

    After that you can search on https://github.com/pnedev the plugin Compareplugin matching the Notepad++ version you work with.

    Hope this may help you.

    Can I undo this unintended clearing?

    No.

    Also have you discovered that styled text is not restored upon file reload, and, upon npp quit and restart?

    If the text you like styled is findable and you’d like to automate reapplying the styles, see these:

    I guess I will stay on Version 8.2.1, then.

    As far as I can tell, this is the root of the complaint:

    To me a little bit of whitespace isn’t a deal-breaker for this feature. But sure, stay on some old version because of this, and miss out on any new enhancements.

    BTW, IMO this is not something that needs a preference setting controlling it. In the words of the N++ author: “too many options = no option” (that may not be an exact quote).

    I didn’t had read the last part of your message.
    I save what is relevant/important. But I like to have some notes here on Notepad++ (datas availables elsewere but it’s convient for me to have them here).

    I save all datas that are important on cloud (Google Drive, My Own Cloud, …) or in my PC.

    But it’s a important reminder, thanks :)

    That GitHub repos does not provide a compiled release nor can I find this in Plugin Admin (64-bit). How does the average Notepad++ user get this tool to use?

    @igor-zavaley ,

    Install the plugin XML Tools by going to Plugins menu, select Plugins Admin, click the checkbox for XML Tools, and click Install. Once Notepad++ restarts, you will have a Plugins > XML Tools sub-menu. If you run Plugins > XML Tools > Check XML Syntax Now , it will perform an XML syntax check, which can check missing/unbalanced closing tags:

    I could be wrong, but I don’t think any mouse action in the editing window will be macro-recorded – you have to do everything via keyboard.

    Also, if I’m trying to express mouse actions here in a Community posting, I might do:

    Ctrl+click (= hold Ctrl while left-clicking the mouse) Alt+rclick (= hold Alt while right-clicking the mouse) Shift+ dclick (= hold Shift while double-clicking the left mouse button)

    @neil-schipper ,

    Although shortcut keys, may be important to you, and I understand, as I used them with early editors also, but the moment we were using mouse and menus, except for Cntrl-c or Cntrl-v, I’ve completely given up using keyboard shortcuts, period. I even used to buy the 116-key keyboards to record shortcuts of only a few important keyboard keymaps/macros, but since the advent of right clicking and context senstive choices, I’ve found little use to remember convoluted keyboard shortcuts.

    I even remember buying those commercial keyboard shortcut templates that fit over the keyboards to use common keyboard shortcuts…but those days are long gone for me and I suspect most users, however, as it is a mostly arcane use these days, someone really needing it is going to find it or ask about it, so I don’t think it’s hidden as much as it is “not emphasized”. But as Peter points out, it’s almost impossible to get people who use free software to read the free documentation. It’s easier for them to waste someone else’s time coming up with an answer they won’t research on their own. It’s just the times and generation we live in now, apparently. ::shrug::

    @neil-schipper said in Compact Find dialogue box or bar possible:

    So the benefit of this is very similar to the benefit of calling functions in code, or “Return from interrupt” on a microprocessor: it automates resumption after completion of a subordinate task.

    In this instance, Neil, I think this is a bad analogy. In the procedural programming paradigm, when the program execution comes to a function, it jumps to the function until completed, but when returned, it jumps to the next instruction after the function calling point, so this example isn’t really applicable to this point of view. :)

    That said, I guess this would be a useful feature to someone, but I look at it like, if I need to know where I started, that’s why there’s line numbers. I usually know at what point I started the search and know where I need to go back to, so this isn’t something I’d care about, but I can see where someone might like this kind of functionality.

    I don’t know if this should have been resolved in the meantime, but I still have the same issue.

    You don’t have an issue, becaue it ISN’T an issue.
    Re-read my posting HERE and try again to understand it, really the part after “But to answer…”.

    If that still leaves you unsatisfied (and I presume it will), check out another variant on the answer to these types of questions, HERE.

    30 things I have to delete or replace

    You can create a multi-step replacement macro.
    See the Macro menu.
    Start recording, then do several different replacement operations.
    Save and name your macro and then test it to see that it indeed executes multiple replacements on some data.

    Re: Copy buffer converts NUL to SPACE

    If you’re going to link to a previous discussion (which happens to be the issue that originally brought me to this forum!), you could at least read through the end. That post explained that there is an Edit > Paste Special > menu, with entries Copy/Cut/Paste Binary Content. That was there in 2015 when I originally asked (though I didn’t know it, and none of the regulars pointed it out), and would have worked with an unedited, plain-vanilla installation of Notepad++ v6.8.7 (which was state-of-the-art in Dec 2015); it still worked in 2019 (after the First Plugin Conversion in v7.6.3); and it still works in the latest-and-greatest v8.3.3 in March 2022:

    Oops, the animation clipped the menu; here’s a static version:
    001311b6-aa41-4ffc-9c16-56a1918591b2-image.png

    The steps are:

    Highlight the text that has the NUL character(s) in it Edit > Paste Special > Copy Binary Content Move to where you want to paste Edit > Paste Special > Paste Binary Content

    Those four simple steps will accomplish your goal, without having to go back to 2016’s NPP v6.9 and edit Scintilla.

    @guy038 said in Search for a wrong comma in csv file:

    your solution, Alan, works only for more than 6 comma chars, found in text, but it misses text containing less than 6 commas !

    Yes (but actually it is your – generic – solution I used!)

    I just try to give them what they ask for:

    Is it possible to search for lines with more than 6 comma?

    And, truly, I think the OP is looking for the case where some program output csv-like text without regard for embedded commas in the data, so it is very likely that the less-than-6-commas case never occurs. (Certainly good to check for it, though).
