      Hi all,
I like NP++ very much but I’m a little bit annoyed because it crashes my Windows 11 explorer every time I try to run the CMD, PowerShell or Eventmgr.
I read about the nppshell.dll issue in some older versions of 2025. But I keep updating NP++. Even with version 8.9.8.1 this issue happens.

      Debug Info:
      Notepad++ v8.9.8.1 (64-bit)
      Build time: Sep 24 2026 - 15:34:11
      Scintilla/Lexilla included: 5.6.6/5.5.3

      mimeTools (3.1)
      NppConverter (4.7)
      NppExport (0.4)

The crashes are shown in the eventlog like this:

The ONLY thing that helps is to rename the file C:\Program Files\Notepad++\contextMenu\NppShell.dll .

I wonder if I’m the only one experiencing this issue.

Thank you in advance for support.

      Best regards,
      Seb

It’s a known problem of the modern NppShell, see the GitHub issue #15683

Most likely this is the culprit but I have no easy solution ready. Also no spare time to fix that (maybe during the end of year holidays), so your workaround (or similar) is what I currently recommend to do for the affected users (you don’t need to rename the NppShell.dll, unregistering that shell extension from within the admin-rights powered CMD by regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Notepad++\contextMenu\NppShell.dll" will do it).

What’s interesting - the problem manifests only on some PCs/configs (I, for one, have never encountered it).

I think it is a rare case, for I know many Windows 11 PCs with NP++ installed where this issue isn’t present.

So pretty standard configuration, except for 4K resolution, i think.

Maybe we can find some similarities between the affected devices?
