      Hello,

I looked at the preferences of Notepad+++, without finding how to customize the toolbar. I often, very often, use the “Save as” command. And I sorely miss this one.

Is there a way to customize the buttons, to add this function?

Check out the Customize Toolbar plugin.

But…for the most part, I don’t understand toolbar buttons when keyboard shortcuts are available–and of course Save As… is keyboard mappable with a default of Ctrl+Alt+s.

I use both. But switching from a keyboard shortcut to a button and back again when you’ve done a long series of mechanical operations, it’s not practical. Either you release the mouse to come back every two seconds, or you keep your hand on the mouse and make keyboard shortcuts with only one hand. Having a button to avoid menus and the keyboard shortcut saves time and makes operations much less tiring.

            Oups.

Thank you for the information. That’s exactly what I’m looking for!

I spoke too quickly: you can add and remove buttons in the toolbar. But the “Save As” button does not exist! :-(

I believe the Customize Toolbar plugin give you the capability to define custom buttons for those things that do not exist by default. It is probably best to read the “help”. Disclaimer: I don’t actually use the plugin, so that’s about the depth of my knowledge.

I’ve been trying to get my head around this in the context of Save As…; just curious, but don’t you have to move hands to keyboard to type a filename anyway after invoking Save As?

Not necessarily. I most often copy a text to be added to the title or extension (“.bln” or".csv" most often). It often happens to me that I don’t change anything in the title and just add the end. In all cases, a right click and a paste are sufficient.

However, I have not yet found the right method to avoid incessant, repetitive and probably unnecessary movements. Copy all the files into a directory, save them with their original name and then change all the names, maybe. In fact, I use the “save as” button in many other programs. It’s a matter of habit. Every time I use Notepad+++, I get upset about its absence.

I suppose you haven’t taken the time to work with Customize Toolbar to make it do what you want. I’m sure it is possible; probably just requires a bit of “extra effort”.

Just a thought, but you could add Save As… to the right-click context menu (the one where Cut / Copy / Paste / etc. appear). This might be almost as good as a toolbar button as it would allow invoking the action from the mouse, but I suppose in reality that is no better than going File -> Save As… (equivalent number of actions).
