        First start by describing your problem more clearly.
        Which version of npp do you use? (menu ? -> debug-info)
        Which operating system version?
        How do you load the file and what can you see?
        Which encoding did you choose and are you sure that the
        file you open is using the same codec?

        Cheers
        Claudia

          Debug Info-
          Notepad++ v7.3.1 (32-bit)
          Build time : Jan 17 2017 - 00:21:10
          Path : C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\notepad++.exe
          Admin mode : OFF
          Local Conf mode : OFF
          OS : Windows 7
          Plugins : mimeTools.dll NppConverter.dll NppExport.dll PluginManager.dll

          I am using windows 7 with notepad ++ 7.3.1(32 bit)
          I opened an XML file with some Japanese text and instead of the Japanese text there were ‘?’.
          encoding- UCS-2 LE BOM. I used to open the same file with same encoding in notepad++ 6.9 earlier. I changed my system and installed this new system, since then I am facing this problem.

            as not every font is capable to show all symbols, I would try to use a different font
            because you see the text as ?, which looks like a replacement for missing symbols.

            Cheers

              Hi Claudia
              I tried using different fonts, but it did not work.

                Same result or different result but not solved.
                By any change - could you upload the xml for testing?
                Or create one which shows the behavior.

                Cheers
