What about opening both versions and click through menu? It isn’t that time consuming.
The most recent from of XML Tools is v2.4.8. Although this was released on 2015-09-05, the Plugin Manager’s list of known plugins was (finally) updated about a week ago so it most likely you finally got the newest update.
My virus scanner did not have a problem with either the zip or the extracted files. It is possible you have a false positive but best to err on the side of caution. You might contact the authors of the plugin to see if they have any additional information.
With the left view active, execute the command on the View menu “Zoom -> Restore Default Zoom”. Now switch to the right view (make it active) and repeat the restore default zoom command. If this doesn’t make the two views nicely viewable side-by-side, post again.

you may edit your post using the “triple dot menu” in the upper right corner of every post. And you need JavaScript to be allowed/enabled on notepad-plus-plus.org, of course.
This is not a problem of NPP. The font you are using simply does not contain a glyph for “LEFTWARDS DOUBLE ARROW” (x21D0). For an overview of fonts containing this glyph, have a look here.
seems to be a problem of the lexer which comes as part of scintilla component.
Should be addressed here.

using UNC or mappings etc…

it might be that this is an workaround you can already use?
Install LuaScript via the Plugin Manager. This was just added to the plugin manager so it might take another few days to show up…you can also download it manually if you dont want to wait. Once installed select Plugins > LuaScript > Edit Startup Script and add the following to that file:

depends on your installation. If using APPDATA configuration then it has to be placed under
%APPDATA%\notepad++\plugins directory otherwise it is the plugins directory within installation folder of npp.
